Is Anyone Truly Gay or Truly Straight?
By Andy Heath
In the movie _Brokeback Mountain_ we came to know two characters that had for their entire lives considered themselves straight. Even after their tryst on the mountain, they went on to have heterosexual relationships and even children. But there was something about each of these men that caused them to appreciate each other's bodies sexually. These two men, men's men even, that were cowboys and masculine and fit absolutely no stereotype of homosexuality actually enjoyed gay sex. What happened?
Now that we've looked at the fiction aspect of gay sex in straight men, let's look at reality. Wait, there's no difference. No difference?
Supposedly straight men have gay sex from time to time. Certainly not all of them, but many of them do have gay sex. Perhaps they only have it once because they are simply curious as to what it would be like. Perhaps there is another man in their lives to whom they are so close that they cannot think of another way to express their love other than with sex. Whatever the reason, I have heard of this happening on more than one occasion. No, this is not a myth. "Straight" men really do have sex.
Now, on the flip side of that… I happen to be a gay man that has made out with women, even after I came out as being gay. But there was a time one evening when I got very drunk that I made out with two women. I fondled their breasts and kissed them, and it was soooooooo incredibly boring. But I have to admit I was a bit curious about why all these straight men were making such a fuss over it. So I did it. And I will probably never do it again.
I would say there are a lot of straight men that have gay experiences that feel the same way. They're glad to finally know that they really don't care for sexual contact with other men. But still, it begs the question as to what extent anyone is truly gay or truly straight.
We might never know the answer to this question, and I would say that the vast majority of straight men that have had any kind of gay encounter would vehemently deny it. But still, it is interesting to know that often the very people that discriminate against gay men and lesbian women often have their own internal demons as they battle with their own homosexual tendencies, however slight.
