Preston - The Book

One of the most important projects I have ever worked on is the book Preston. This book is my attempt to answer the question that so many ask: Why do gays turn away from Christianity. In this work of fiction, I will introduce you to a character named Preston, a gay high school student that falls in love with a male friend. Preston goes through all the ordeals of responding to his own internal demons as well as moderate and radical Christians.

Although the book is a memoir of a Christian boy that must come to terms with his own homosexuality, it is so more because he must also face moderate and radical Christians. Additionally, like all of us, he has an everyday life that he must live, and even this everyday life becomes a struggle for him.

Preston meets a new friend named Eric with whom he falls in love. Rather than accepting himself as who he is, he finds it easier to fall into the trap of self hatred and hatred of other gays. He joins a group of powerful religious zealots that intend to terrorize their school and community into compliance with their idea of God’s law. As Preston goes through his day to day life, he finds himself spiraling out of control until he is forced to choose between his religion and his morals.

You may think such a choice is unfair and immoral in and of itself. Gays and lesbians, however, face must face such choices at some point in their lives. We all come to a day of reckoning in which we fight to retain a part of ourselves that we cannot and fight to deny a part of ourselves that we no longer can. Preston addresses these very difficult, real-life situations. When I am able to publish this book, I hope you will have a chance to read it. I think you will be touched by it, whether or not you’re gay.
