Wisdom Obtained from Being Gay
By Andy Heath
After all the suffering that we go through, after all the rejection, and after all the pain, is it possible that we as gays and lesbians can gain great wisdom from these experiences? The answer is an emphatic yes.
The Christians' own Bible says in I Peter 1:7 that our trials have greater value than even gold, and that gold is purified with fire. I have often heard Christians refer to this scripture when talking about the difficult times in their own lives (although Christians in the United States are not known for their difficult lives). Not to be mean to the Christians, but I have often taken this verse and claimed it for the gays and lesbians around the world. You see, we do end up better because of our suffering.
It has been said that what does not kill us makes us stronger. I believe even things that kill us make our spirits stronger. Think Matthew Shepherd who died for our cause at the hand of cruel homophobic people. I believe his spirit is stronger because of his suffering, and even now from beyond the grave he has much to teach us about courage.
